Wearing Black on Friday

Teachers, including our retired group, please wear black on Friday to support the Louisiana Public School in solidarity with the teacher, Ms. Hargrave, who was arrested for speaking at a meeting concerning the stagnant wages of the teachers in her district. The Superintendent was receiving a raise and Ms. Hargrave felt the decision was unfair. it is ridiculous.

As a former retired teacher, we must continue to speak up… Free Speech, they call it, especially in this present political climate. Speak out and have your voices heard throughout this great land.

Please continue to follow education blogs, including Badass Teachers Association, and become knowledgeable, and spread your expertise to parents and students.

Solidarity… it works..

Earl Jaques Bows To The Delaware Chamber Of Commerce Over Special Education Diplomas

The Season Of Myths

It looks like you need special permission to introduce legislation to help students with disabilities.  At the Joint House and Senate Education Committee today in Delaware, State Rep. Earl Jaques asked one of the presenters of the special education strategic plan if she checked with the Delaware Chamber Of Commerce first before pushing legislation for special education diplomas.  Currently, many students with disabilities with complex and intensive needs get a certificate in lieu of a diploma.  Many businesses will not hire these young adults after graduation because they do not have a diploma.

The legislation, which was filed last week by State Rep. Kim Williams, would award these students a diploma based on modified standards.  It is not exactly the same as a regular diploma because of those modified standards, but it is still a diploma.  That way, these students would be able to check the box on job…

A New Orleans Parent Warns Houstonians to Beware the Elite “Saviors”

Diane Ravitch's blog

Ashana Bigard is a native of New Orleans and a parent. This is her warning to the parents and other citizens of Houston.

She writes:

“My prayers are with you, Texas. My memories are with you too. The day after Katrina hit New Orleans, my family and I made the 17 hour car ride to Houston. The people of Texas welcomed us, opening their homes and helping us out with clothing, even financial assistance. As a native New Orleanian, I wish that I could do the same for you now. But what’s happened in my city and to its schools serves as a cautionary tale to residents of Houston. Reeling from the disaster, our communities were scattered like the four winds. I returned from Houston, many of us did, but the New Orleans we left doesn’t belong to us anymore.

“Rents have quadrupled as gentrification remakes whole neighborhoods, pushing out…

How Hillary Can Win

kavips

By announcing that she will write off ALL student loan debt.  Student debt was a big factor behind Bernie’s ascension.  Much of his money came as a result of those donating who looked to him to solve their financial nightmare they inherited after finishing 4 years of college…

Hillary can capitalize on that and bring in those youth still suspicious of her past motives. But she should add the punch line,”but if there is anything we learned from Obama’s 8 years,  it will take an entire Democratic Congress for me to accomplish that…”

And if she were to do this, she really wouldn’t have to do anything else during her tenure to address current inequality, since this one issue would be enough to right all wrongs..

Write off $1 trillion and let that money get spent in our economy instead of being sucked out.

In one fell swoop, it would transfer future…

A Superintendent’s Platform for the Presidential Campaign

This can work…lets get it done.

Diane Ravitch's blog

Martha Bruckner is the President of the National Superintendents’ Roundtable, and she is also the superintendent of schools in Council Bluffs, Iowa. She noted that the presidential candidates were ignoring education but offering many campaign promises. She decided to write an educator’s platform for presidential candidates.

A Superintendent’s Presidential Campaign Platform
Inspired by the campaign promises of some of our 2016 Presidential candidates, Roundtable superintendent Martha Bruckner of Council Bluffs,Iowa, writes,

“Listening to some presidential candidates makes me wonder if school superintendents could do similar things. Just announce what you will do. No plan or work needed!”

In that spirit, here’s Martha’s campaign platform:
All children will be loved.
No families will live in poverty.
All children will start school on an equal basis, economically and socially, and will be ready (eager) to learn.
All children will read by third grade, and will love reading.
Every child will love…

Where Did the School Libraries Go?

When I was in school, one of my favorite places was the  school Library . It still is !!! I love to smell the  books ,cruise the shelves, fiddle with the newsprint and read the glossy posters of new books being published. Children today  can’t use these  things in our current school environment. The administrations are changing these big rooms to Media Centers. And I don’t like it and disagree totally!!

The Library is a place to learn, grow ,explore, research, write, read, love books, read a new story ,great literature, magazines, newspaper, knowledge, information, friends, librarians, ” just sit and read” kind of room, silent , peaceful, desks, tables, lights, and it goes on…..Now we have computers, which are good, don’t get me wrong, we use the everyday.but …..they  cannot compare to a qualified Libraians  that can help children with picking a  book to read, explores subjects we are learning in school, help you write a research paper, motivate you to want to read, repeat….motivate you to want to read……

SO. Why are we not replacing Librarians again? I am confused…..

Jack, Get Any New Orders?

It’s been a while since I (Harry) last posted. I’ve spent the time looking into a May4th through the 6th of this year, at a retreat known as Camp Philos which took place in New York State. It was organized and directed by Education Reform Now, a group with strong ties to the corporate raiders seeking to turn public education into a cash cow. This is evident when you look at the leadership of the group, they…

Education Reformers Proven Wrong Again

kavips

And another study piles on… again proving that Jack Markell, Arne Duncun, Mark Murphy, Rodel, Chief’s for Change, are all wrong for education…  We have seen a glut of such studies this year… compared to zero studies that support any of the premises being made by these so called reformers… Don’t take my word for it simply because I say so, but to me it is safe to say they are all on the wrong track…

This study focuses on what happens or happened, in impoverished school districts where a Federal Court said:  “rectify this, it isn’t equal education….”

In all those cases more money was spent in schools and results got better….

You see, the enemy to education is poverty.  If you attack poverty, you improve education… If you do nothing  but test what students don’t know, you get nothing but a lot of documentations stating that students don’t know…
